We are pleased to share that the Congenital Heart Research Network Development Workshop has successfully taken place, marking a major milestone in advancing congenital heart disease (CHD) research across the UK and Ireland.
Held at the Royal Society of Medicine and supported by the BHF CRC and the Miskin Family, the event brought together clinicians, researchers, patients, and partners committed to improving lifelong outcomes for people living with CHD.
Part of a National Congenital Heart Disease Research Strategy
The workshop builds on the work of the James Lind Alliance CHD Priority Setting Partnership (CHD PSP), which identified the Top 10 research priorities for children and adults. These now underpin a National Strategy for CHD Research, endorsed by leading organisations and designed to improve lifelong care.
A central element of this strategy is the creation of the Congenital Heart Research Network, a collaborative platform for multi-centre, people-focused studies. The workshop marked a significant step toward establishing this Network, aimed at addressing national priorities through coordinated research.
What happened at the workshop
Through peer-led presentations and interactive discussions, participants:
- Explored opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and institutions
- Co-developed a shared vision for the future of CHD research
- Tackled themes including governance, project development, research training, and inclusive authorship practices
The event fostered a strong spirit of collaboration and laid the groundwork for an inclusive approach to research that centres the voices of patients and families.
Looking ahead
The momentum generated by the workshop signals an exciting new chapter for CHD research. At the BHF CRC, we remain committed to supporting this national effort to deliver impactful, people-driven studies that improve care and outcomes for all those affected.
