Cardio‑oncology has emerged as a critical research priority at the intersection of cardiovascular science and cancer care. As advances in oncology continue to improve survival, there is growing recognition of the need to protect long‑term heart health in people living with and beyond cancer. Progress in this complex field depends on robust, cross‑disciplinary research—an approach that underpins the NIHR-BHF Partnership Cardio‑Oncology Theme.
The theme was established to advance high‑quality cardiovascular research in the context of cancer. It brings together clinicians, researchers, health professionals, and service users across cardiology and oncology, with a focus on key priorities such as cardiovascular risk prediction, mechanisms of cardiotoxicity, early detection, and the development of interventions that protect the heart without compromising cancer outcomes.
The BHF CRC plays a central role in supporting this work. Its contributions include coordinating a national research executive committee, facilitating engagement through a dedicated patient forum, and enabling collaboration across a wide UK network of clinical and academic experts. These structures help ensure that research priorities are strategically aligned, inclusive, and clinically relevant.
Reflecting on the collaborative nature of the field, Professor Ninian Lang, Chair of the NIHR‑BHF Cardio‑Oncology National Research Executive Committee, explains:
‘By definition, cardio‑oncology is a collaborative specialty. Through the NIHR-BHF Partnership theme, we have prioritised joint working between cardiologists, haematologists, oncologists, and patients. By harnessing this team‑based approach at a national scale, the UK is well positioned to drive meaningful advances in this rapidly evolving field. The BHF CRC is a vital partner in these ambitions.’
Patient involvement as a core part of research:
A defining strength of this work is the meaningful involvement of patients. Through a dedicated patient advisory forum, people with lived experience of cancer and cardiovascular disease play an integral role in shaping decision‑making, offering perspectives that strengthen the relevance, quality, and impact of research.
Through the NIHR-BHF Partnership, supported by the BHF CRC, cardio‑oncology research in the UK is becoming more coordinated, inclusive, and responsive to real‑world needs. By working collaboratively across disciplines, and with patients as partners, this approach is helping to build a stronger evidence base to support cardiovascular health throughout the cancer journey.
